Licensing
Legend offers a free tier and paid tiers, all running on your own infrastructure. Licensing connects your self-hosted instance to the plan you have chosen through the customer portal.
Community, Starter, and Business
- Community is free and covers a small number of entities, which is enough to map a team and see the value.
- Starter suits growing organizations that need more capacity and features such as custom branding and API access.
- Business is for organizations that want the highest capacity, single sign-on, group-based access control, and full theming.
The pricing page has the current entity limits and feature differences for each tier. Choose based on how many entities you expect to map and which features you need.
How self-hosted licensing works
Paid plans are managed through the customer portal, which is where billing is handled and where your license key is generated. The key is an offline token tied to your subscription. You paste it into your self-hosted instance to activate your plan, and the only outbound check is a lightweight validation that can also be satisfied offline. The Community tier runs without a key.
Applying a license key
- Sign in to the customer portal and copy your license key.
- In Legend, sign in as an administrator and open the licensing or settings area.
- Paste the key and save.
- Confirm the instance now reports your tier and its entity limit.
Some deployments prefer to supply the key as an environment variable at deploy time instead of pasting it in the UI. Both approaches activate the same plan; use whichever fits how you manage configuration.

Upgrading
- Upgrade your plan in the customer portal.
- Copy the updated license key.
- Apply the new key to your instance, replacing the previous one.
- Confirm the additional capacity and features are now available.
Because everything stays on your own infrastructure, changing plans does not move your data anywhere. Your map is unaffected by the upgrade beyond gaining the new limits and features.
